Chance side effect creates thick eyelashes, market for Latisse
February 24, 2009 at 8:40 am

Another drug is getting a second life because of desirable side effects.

Botox was originally approved by the Food and Drug Administration to reduce eye spasms. Then the world realized it also made people look younger by eliminating wrinkles.

Human growth hormone was intended for children with growth disorders, but older people seeking the fountain of youth and athletes wanting a boost started finding illegal suppliers of HGH for muscle growth and overall toning.

A Job That Requires Vision - Baltimore Sun Profile of May Eye Care's Refractive Coordinator
February 24, 2009 at 8:38 am

The Baltimore Sun recently ran a profile in their business section on Jamie Green, the Refractive Coordinator at the May Eye Care Center: Green works five days a week, starting at 8 a.m. Much of her job is focused on patient consultations. She serves as the first contact for those considering Lasik eye surgery. She meets with two or three patients each day and the consultations usually last about one hour. During this time, she’ll go over the vision correction procedure and answer any questions. She administers a few tests, which include measuring patients’ corneas and checking their eye prescriptions.

Typical day:

She estimates she sees most patients about eight or nine times, starting with the initial consultation and ending with follow-up visits that include annual checkups.

Although her job is focused on assisting Lasik patients, the center also offers other eye care, including cataract surgery and clear lens exchange, which she sometimes will suggest to patients.
